Sweden Company Lookup: No Industry Codes, No Owners

A Sweden company lookup runs through Bolagsverket, the Swedish Companies Registration Office, and its e-service Sök företagsinformation, which replaced Näringslivsregistret. This guide covers what the free search gives you, two things the registrar states it does not hold at all, and what changed when the old service closed. The registrar does not register industry codes

Most of what a company-data user wants from a national register is identity: who this company is, where it sits, who runs it. Industry classification tends to be assumed to come with it. In Sweden it does not, and Bolagsverket is unusually direct about why:

"På Bolagsverket har vi ingen statistik över olika branscher, exempelvis städföretag, tjänsteföretag eller byggföretag, då vi inte registrerar den typen av uppgifter (bransch- eller SNI-koder)."

At Bolagsverket we have no statistics on different industries — cleaning companies, service companies or construction companies, for example — because we do not register that type of information (industry or SNI codes).

Note the structure of the sentence. The absence of statistics is presented as a consequence of the absence of the field. The registrar is not declining to publish something it holds; it does not hold it.

The consequence for anyone working with Swedish company data is worth stating plainly, and it is a statement about provenance rather than about quality. Any Swedish company dataset carrying an industry code sourced that code somewhere other than the registrar. It may be excellent. It may be derived from a statistical authority, from filings, from a company's own description, from inference. But it did not come from Bolagsverket, because Bolagsverket says it does not register it.

Which means that a reader comparing two Swedish datasets on industry is comparing two third-party classifications, not two readings of an official field. When two sources disagree about a Swedish company's industry, there is no registry value to check them against and settle it. That is a different situation from a disagreement about a registered address or a board member, where an authoritative answer exists.

No register of shareholders

The second absence is stated in the same place and is just as flat:

"I våra register finns uppgifter om vilka som är firmatecknare, styrelseledamöter med mera, i företaget. Men vi har inget register över vilka som är aktieägare."

Our registers contain information on who the firmatecknare — those authorised to sign for the company — and the styrelseledamöter, the board members, are, among other things. But we have no register of who the shareholders are.

So the register answers who acts for this company and does not answer who owns it. Those are different questions, and it is easy to let the first stand in for the second when a record lists names.

Where Swedish shareholder information does live is not something this page will say. The source states that Bolagsverket has no such register; it does not say what does. Filling that in from general knowledge would be exactly the plausible-sounding invention this series exists to avoid, and SWEDEN_REPORT.md records it as an open question rather than a settled one.

The service changed, and the old one is gone

Bolagsverket's own page is unambiguous: "Den 30 september 2025 stängdes Näringslivsregistret." On 30 September 2025, Näringslivsregistret was closed. Users are directed to Sök företagsinformation for current company information.

That is worth a line of honesty about pages like this one. Across this series, four US state registers replaced their systems inside about three years, and guides ranking today still describe the retired ones. Sweden now joins that list. Any guide naming a portal is one migration away from being the stale one, and this page is not exempt — it names a service, with the date the previous one closed, and that is the best a page of this kind can do.

The absences above are the page's finding, but they sit beside a service that is free and reasonably rich.

Three things it surfaces are worth naming because they are the kind of signal a reader is usually looking for: whether a company has a status such as bankruptcy initiated, whether it has ongoing matters, and whether an annual report has arrived that is not yet registered. Bolagsverket names a limit on the new service in its own words: "Ibland kan du inte se historisk information i Sök företagsinformation." Sometimes you cannot see historical information in Sök företagsinformation.

That sentence is quoted rather than paraphrased because its qualifier is the whole of it. Bolagsverket says ibland — sometimes — not never, and this page does not extend it into a rule about when or why. What it establishes is that historical information in the new service is not guaranteed, which is enough for a reader to plan around.

The route past the single-company search is named, and it is an unusual one. For a selection or a more advanced search producing compiled data or packaged information by certain criteria, Bolagsverket directs you to its informationsförsörjning unit, by telephone or at informationsforsorjning@bolagsverket.se.

Across this series, registers answer the "more than one company at a time" question in a variety of ways — an API you subscribe to, files you download, a priced monthly snapshot, a list builder, a documented bulk endpoint. Sweden's answer is none of those. It is a department you contact, by phone or email. That is a legitimate route and a clearly signposted one; it is simply a human one rather than a technical one, and anyone planning around it should plan for a conversation rather than an endpoint.

One dated change is coming: "Från och med den 1 juli 2026 justeras tillgången till uppgifter ur registret över verkliga huvudmän." From 1 July 2026, access to information from the register of beneficial owners is being adjusted. How it is being adjusted is not something this page states, because the source does not say.

A repeatable Sweden company lookup workflow

1. Search Sök företagsinformation with the organisationsnummer where you have one, the company name where you do not.
2. Search by a person's name or personnummer when you are starting from a person.
3. Label any Swedish industry code in your data with the source it actually came from, which is not the registrar.
4. Read firmatecknare and styrelseledamöter as authority and governance, never as ownership.
5. Check for ongoing matters and for an annual report received but not yet registered before concluding a record is settled.
6. Contact informationsförsörjning for any selection or compiled extract, and allow time for a human process.
