Austria Company Lookup: Reliance on a Self-Service Query

An Austria company lookup runs through the Firmenbuch, kept by the Firmenbuchgerichte — the commercial register divisions of the Landesgerichte. Public access runs through JustizOnline at justizonline.gv.at, or through Verrechnungsstellen, billing agents commissioned by the Bundesministerium für Justiz. This guide covers what a self-service query is worth in Austrian law, when you still need a certified extract, and the two routes in. Austria company lookup: the short version

• The Ministry of Justice states the data you query is always current and valid and that you may rely on it under § 15 UGB.
• Copies you make from a query are identical in content to officially produced Firmenbuch extracts from the court or a notary.
• But a public document to present to an authority still requires a beglaubigter Auszug from the Landesgericht or a notary.

Reliance, granted in the query

Most registers in this series are careful to separate the convenient lookup from the authoritative document. Austria draws that line too — but it puts something on the convenient side that almost nobody else does.

"So können Sie das Firmenbuch abfragen und Abschriften daraus erstellen, die mit amtlich hergestellten Firmenbuchauszügen (Firmenbuchgericht, Notare) inhaltlich völlig identisch sind. Die so von Ihnen abgefragten Daten sind immer auf dem letzten Stand und gültig; Sie können nach § 15 UGB darauf vertrauen."

So you can query the Firmenbuch and make copies from it that are entirely identical in content to officially produced Firmenbuch extracts from the commercial register court or from notaries. The data you query in this way is always at the latest state and valid; you may rely on it under § 15 UGB.

That is a register telling you that a self-service query carries statutory reliance. Not "the data is good", not "we take care" — a citation to the provision under which you may trust it.

And in the same passage, the limit:

"Wer jedoch eine öffentliche Urkunde über den Stand des Firmenbuchs zwecks Vorlage vor einer Behörde etc. benötigt, muss einen beglaubigten Auszug beim Landesgericht (Firmenbuchabteilung) oder Notar erstellen lassen."

Whoever needs a public document on the state of the Firmenbuch for presentation to an authority must have a certified extract produced by the Landesgericht (commercial register division) or a notary.

Both halves come from the same source and both belong on the page. You may rely on what you queried. You may not present it as a public document. Reliance and evidentiary form are two different things, and Austria grants the first while reserving the second.

A certified extract is also available electronically, as a signierter Stichtagsauszug carrying the electronic signature of the justice system — so the evidentiary route is not necessarily a paper one.

Four registers, four answers to "can I rely on this?"

Austria completes a set this series has been assembling, and the four positions are genuinely distinct.

Two routes in, and neither is named here

Public access to the Firmenbuch database has a shape worth knowing before you plan anything:

"Der öffentliche Zugang zur Firmenbuch-Datenbank erfolgt entweder im Auftrag des Bundesministerium für Justiz über sogenannte Verrechnungsstellen, bei denen sich der Kunde eine Zugangsberechtigung, einen 'Account' besorgen muss, oder direkt über JustizOnline."

Public access to the Firmenbuch database occurs either through so-called Verrechnungsstellen — billing agents acting on behalf of the Bundesministerium für Justiz, with whom the customer must obtain an access authorisation, an "account" — or directly through JustizOnline.

So: a commissioned-intermediary route requiring an account, and a direct route through the justice portal.

This page describes the mechanism and does not name the agents. Several are named on public sector pages, and at least one is itself a company data provider — naming commercial intermediaries on our own page is a different decision from describing that the route exists, and it is not one this guide makes. On cost, the Ministry is direct: "Die Abfrage des Firmenbuches ist kostenpflichtig." Querying the Firmenbuch is subject to a fee. The fees follow Tarifpost 10 Z IV of the Gerichtsgebührengesetz, and the Verrechnungsstellen may charge a surcharge that the Ministry of Justice must approve. No figure appears on this page — the structure is the durable fact and the amounts are not.

What an Austrian company register entry contains

A self-contained summary. The free partial extract, and the January 2025 opening

Two facts sit against the fee, and both are practical.

Teilauszüge are free. On JustizOnline, "Teilauszüge (PDF)" can be downloaded free of charge. Detailed extracts and documents carry a fee set by law for each document type, and "Der Kauf von Dokumenten setzt eine Anmeldung mit ID Austria voraus." — purchasing documents requires logging in with ID Austria. Search is by company name or Firmenbuchnummer, with filters.

The consequence is worth leading a workflow with: a reader who only needs to confirm that a company exists, and see its basic entry, need neither pay nor log in. The paid, authenticated path begins when you need a detailed extract or a document.

And since January 2025, some of the Firmenbuch is open data. The Ministry states that "Seit Jänner 2025 stehen beispielsweise hochwertige Datensätze des Firmenbuchs (High Value Datasets - HVDs) kostenlos" zur Verfügung — since January 2025, high-value datasets of the Firmenbuch have been available free of charge. Licence applications are answered within four weeks, stating whether and on what conditions and charges the requested documents can be licensed.

Which datasets, and by what route, is not covered here. The source states the fact and the licence process in the same passage without separating them, so this page does not separate them either. Where an Austria lookup stops

One cross-border floor applies and is worth stating because it sets a minimum independent of everything above: EU member states must make certain company information — name, legal form, seat, register state and registration number — freely accessible for the capital companies entered in their business registers, and the European e-Justice Portal's company search reaches national registers.

This page describes no field of a Firmenbuch entry, because none was sourced. It also does not describe the register's divisions, the Ediktsdatei, or the § 89e GOG reliance provision — the last appears on a Verrechnungsstelle's own site rather than the Ministry's, which is not a source this series accepts for a legal proposition. Data quality pitfalls to avoid in Austria

Presenting a queried copy as a public document. Reliance under § 15 UGB is granted on the query; a public document for an authority requires a certified extract from the Landesgericht or a notary.

Paying to confirm a company exists. Teilauszüge in PDF are free on JustizOnline, and no login is needed for them.

Assuming a single access route. Public access runs either through Verrechnungsstellen, where an account is required, or directly through JustizOnline.

Budgeting from the statutory tariff alone. Verrechnungsstellen may charge a surcharge, which the Ministry of Justice must approve.

Assuming the HVD opening covers what you need. High-value Firmenbuch datasets have been free since January 2025, but which datasets and by what route is not established here.

Expecting a paper certificate. A certified extract is also available electronically as a signierter Stichtagsauszug with the justice system's electronic signature.

1. Start with a free Teilauszug on JustizOnline when you only need to confirm existence and read the basic entry.
2. Search by Firmenbuchnummer where you have one, by company name where you do not.
3. Log in with ID Austria only when you actually need a detailed extract or a document.
4. Decide whether you need reliance or a public document before ordering anything — they are different routes.
5. Order a beglaubigter Auszug from the Landesgericht or a notary when a document must be presented to an authority.
