Germany Company Lookup: A Live Read, Not an Extract

A Germany company lookup runs through the Handelsregister, kept by the local Amtsgerichte — the district courts. The joint access point is the Gemeinsames Registerportal der Länder at handelsregister.de, operated by the Land of Nordrhein-Westfalen on behalf of the Länder justice administrations. A second portal, the Unternehmensregister at unternehmensregister.de, exists for publication-mandatory company data. This guide covers what the register search actually does, why there are two portals, and which one holds the accounts. If you need the German population rather than one company at a time, the Germany company directory covers the same registered companies with industry, size and contact breakdowns attached, and the Germany business database is the same file described as a dataset.

Germany company lookup: the short version

  • A search does not return a stored copy. The justice administrations state the search accesses the live dataset of the relevant Handelsregister directly, and that currency is guaranteed at all times.
  • Annual accounts are not in the Handelsregister. The Federal Ministry of Justice states they are published in the Unternehmensregister instead.
  • Retrieval has been free since 1 August 2022, and a separate registration at the portal is no longer required.
  • Gesellschafterlisten — shareholder lists of capital companies — are retrievable from the portal as documents.

The search reads the live register

Almost every guide in this series has had to explain how to interpret an extract date. The German justice administrations make that question go away, and they say why:

"Sie erhalten authentische Daten aus dem amtlichen Register, da die Recherche unmittelbar auf den Echtdatenbestand des jeweiligen Handelsregisters zugreift."

You receive authentic data from the official register, because the search accesses the live dataset (Echtdatenbestand) of the relevant Handelsregister directly.

And, in the same place:

"Die Aktualität der bereits einsehbaren Daten ist jederzeit gewährleistet."

The currency of the data already viewable is guaranteed at all times.

That is an architectural statement, not a marketing one, and the consequence for anyone building on German register data is specific: there is no extract date to interpret, because there is no extract. The freshness question — how old is this copy, when was it last refreshed, has the source moved since — does not arise, because there is no copy sitting between the reader and the register.

Two neighbouring registers answer the same question with the opposite architecture, and the contrast is worth reading rather than ranking. The Hungary company lookup guide covers a free service that returns a stored cégkivonat, refreshed only when the underlying data changes — so its effective date can be more than a week old, and the register explains that this means nothing changed rather than that something is stale.

Two registers, two designs. A stored copy with an explained refresh rule, and a live read with no copy at all. Neither is better, and pretending otherwise would misrepresent both: a live read removes the freshness question and puts load on the register; a stored copy makes the date meaningful and requires the reader to know how to read it. The point for anyone working across both is that "when was this data current?" is a question with a different shape in each country, and carrying one country's answer to the other produces nonsense.

Accounts are in the other portal

The second thing to know before searching is that a large part of what people want from a company register is not in this one. The Federal Ministry of Justice is direct about it:

"Rechnungslegungsunterlagen wie Jahresabschlüsse und andere Gesellschaftsbekanntmachungen werden hingegen nicht im Handelsregister eingetragen, sondern im Unternehmensregister veröffentlicht."

Accounting documents such as annual financial statements, and other company announcements, are not entered in the Handelsregister but published in the Unternehmensregister.

So a reader looking for German financials in the Handelsregister is in the wrong portal, and no amount of searching will fix that. The Ministry also states that the Unternehmensregister was created as a unified digital information portal at unternehmensregister.de as of 1 January 2007 — the same date on which, it says, the Handelsregister became fully digitised.

One more fact belongs beside them, because it changed the economics of both: "Seit dem 1. August 2022 ist der Abruf dieser Dokumente beim Handelsregisterportal und beim Unternehmensregister kostenfrei möglich." Since 1 August 2022, retrieval of these documents at the register portal and at the Unternehmensregister has been free of charge. — nationwide, free, and a separate registration at the portal is no longer required.

What a German company register entry contains

A self-contained summary. Germany's commercial register is the Handelsregister, kept by the local Amtsgerichte. The Gemeinsames Registerportal der Länder at handelsregister.de is the joint access point and is operated by the Land of Nordrhein-Westfalen on behalf of the Länder justice administrations; the Federal Ministry of Justice states it offers central access to the locally kept Handels-, Genossenschafts-, Partnerschafts- und Vereinsregister and to the Registerbekanntmachungen in Germany, and that it can be inspected by anyone. The justice administrations state that a search returns authentic data from the official register because it accesses the live dataset of the relevant Handelsregister directly, and that the currency of the data already viewable is guaranteed at all times. Beyond register entries, the portal allows retrieval of documents sent electronically to the register court and belonging to the Registerordner or Sonderband — for example Anmeldungen zum Register, Gesellschafterlisten and Satzungen von Kapitalgesellschaften — and access to the Registerbekanntmachungen under § 10 HGB. A search function allows all companies registered in Germany to be found without knowledge of the register number or the company's seat, and part of the company name is enough as a search term. Accounting documents such as annual financial statements and other company announcements are not entered in the Handelsregister but published in the Unternehmensregister at unternehmensregister.de, created as a unified digital information portal as of 1 January 2007. The Handelsregister in its present structure was established in 1861 and has been fully digitised since 1 January 2007. Since 1 August 2022 retrieval of these documents at the register portal and at the Unternehmensregister has been free of charge, and a separate registration at the portal is no longer required. The EHUG of 10 November 2006 obliged the Länder to allow citizens at home and abroad to inspect register data via an internet platform and created the possibility of cross-Land cooperation; the portal opens central access to the Länder's automated register retrieval systems under § 9 Abs. 1 HGB and serves the announcement of register court entries under § 10 HGB. In Brandenburg the Handelsregister (Abteilungen A und B), the Genossenschafts-, Gesellschafts- und Partnerschaftsregister and the Vereinsregister are concentrated at the Amtsgerichte Cottbus, Frankfurt (Oder), Neuruppin and Potsdam; generally the Handelsregisterauszug is issued by the Handelsregister division of the Amtsgericht responsible for the entity's seat.

The federal paradox

Germany's register arrangement looks contradictory until you see the order it was built in, and the order is the explanation.

The registers themselves are local. They are kept by the Amtsgerichte, and a Handelsregisterauszug is generally issued by the Handelsregister division of the Amtsgericht responsible for that entity's seat. Brandenburg shows what that means concretely: the Handelsregister (Abteilungen A und B), the Genossenschafts-, Gesellschafts- und Partnerschaftsregister and the Vereinsregister are concentrated at the Amtsgerichte Cottbus, Frankfurt (Oder), Neuruppin and Potsdam.

The access point is national. The Ministry states that "Das Registerportal unter www.handelsregister.de bietet einen zentralen Zugang zu den örtlich geführten Handels-, Genossenschafts-, Partnerschafts- und Vereinsregistern und den Registerbekanntmachungen in Deutschland und kann von jedem eingesehen werden" — central access to the locally kept registers and to the register announcements in Germany, and it can be inspected by anyone.

The operator is one Land, acting for the others: "Das gemeinsame Registerportal der Länder wird im Auftrag der Landesjustizverwaltungen vom Land Nordrhein-Westfalen betrieben."

And the obligation is federal. The EHUG of 10 November 2006 obliged the Länder to allow citizens at home and abroad to inspect register data via an internet platform, and created the possibility of cross-Land cooperation. The portal opens central access to the Länder's automated register retrieval systems under § 9 Abs. 1 HGB and serves the announcement of register court entries under § 10 HGB.

Local registers, one federal duty, one Land running the shared machinery for everyone. For a reader the practical effect is simple — search nationally, and remember that the authoritative office for any given company is a particular local court.

The Ministry also notes the age of the arrangement: "Das Handelsregister in seiner heutigen Struktur wurde im Jahr 1861 eingerichtet und ist seit dem 1. Januar 2007 vollständig digitalisiert." Established in its present structure in 1861, fully digitised since 1 January 2007.

Gesellschafterlisten are in the portal

One finding here is the kind most readers assume is unavailable without a lawyer.

Beyond register entries, the portal allows retrieval of documents sent electronically to the register court and belonging to the Registerordner or Sonderband — among them Anmeldungen zum Register, Gesellschafterlisten and Satzungen von Kapitalgesellschaften.

Shareholder lists of capital companies are retrievable as documents from the portal. Since 1 August 2022 that retrieval has been free and needs no separate portal registration. For anyone mapping German ownership, that is a materially different starting position from assuming shareholding is private.

Where a Germany lookup stops

The search is unusually forgiving, which is worth one sentence because it saves readers from hunting for identifiers they do not have:

"Über eine Suchfunktion lassen sich alle in Deutschland eingetragenen Unternehmen auch ohne Kenntnis von Registernummer und Firmensitz finden. Für das Auffinden eines Unternehmens reicht als Suchbegriff bereits ein Teil der Firmenbezeichnung aus."

All companies registered in Germany can be found without knowing the register number or the company's seat, and part of the company name is enough as a search term.

This page stops short of describing the structure of a German register entry, what the register's divisions signify, or how entities are classified within it. None of that was established from the sources read on the date shown, so none of it appears. GERMANY_REPORT.md names each gap with what would confirm it — including one omission that, if it can be sourced from the portal itself, would be the strongest bulk-access fact in this entire series.

Where the question is a population rather than a company, a firmographic directory covers the same registered companies with classification, size and contact data attached and queryable as a set; the Europe company directory breaks the European file down by market.

Data quality pitfalls to avoid in Germany

Looking for annual accounts in the Handelsregister. The Federal Ministry of Justice states they are not entered there but published in the Unternehmensregister.

Building an extract-date field for German data. The search accesses the live dataset directly, so there is no stored copy whose age needs interpreting.

Carrying a freshness model across the border. A stored-copy register and a live-read register pose the currency question in different shapes, and one country's answer does not transfer.

Assuming shareholder lists are private. Gesellschafterlisten of capital companies are retrievable from the portal as documents.

Expecting to need a register number or a seat. Part of the company name is enough, and the search finds all companies registered in Germany without either.

Treating the portal as the authoritative office. The registers are kept by the Amtsgerichte, and a Handelsregisterauszug is generally issued by the division of the court responsible for the entity's seat.

A repeatable Germany company lookup workflow

  1. Search handelsregister.de with part of the company name, without hunting for a register number or seat.
  2. Go to unternehmensregister.de for annual accounts rather than looking for them in the Handelsregister.
  3. Open the Registerordner or Sonderband documents when you need Gesellschafterlisten or Satzungen.
  4. Record the Amtsgericht responsible for the entity's seat alongside the record.
  5. Do not model a German record as a dated extract; the search reads the live register.
  6. Expect no portal registration and no charge for retrieval, in force since 1 August 2022.

Frequently asked questions

Does a German register search return a stored copy?

No. The justice administrations state that you receive authentic data from the official register because the search accesses the live dataset of the relevant Handelsregister directly, and that the currency of the data already viewable is guaranteed at all times.

Where are German annual accounts?

In the Unternehmensregister at unternehmensregister.de. The Federal Ministry of Justice states that accounting documents such as annual financial statements, and other company announcements, are not entered in the Handelsregister.

Is the German register free?

Since 1 August 2022, retrieval of these documents at the register portal and at the Unternehmensregister has been free of charge, and a separate registration at the portal is no longer required.

Can I get a German company's shareholder list?

The portal allows retrieval of documents belonging to the Registerordner or Sonderband, among them Gesellschafterlisten and Satzungen von Kapitalgesellschaften.

Do I need the register number to search?

No. All companies registered in Germany can be found without knowledge of the register number or the company's seat, and part of the company name is enough as a search term.

Who actually keeps the German register?

The local Amtsgerichte. The joint portal is operated by the Land of Nordrhein-Westfalen on behalf of the Länder justice administrations, under a federal obligation created by the EHUG of 10 November 2006.

How old is the Handelsregister?

The Federal Ministry of Justice states it was established in its present structure in 1861 and has been fully digitised since 1 January 2007.

Every German sentence quoted above is the publisher's own wording, read on the date shown, with an English gloss beside it rather than in place of it. Four publishers are represented: the federal Ministry of Justice and three Land justice administrations. No amount appears anywhere in this page's prose.

This page describes no division of the register, no classification scheme and no entry structure, because none was sourced. GERMANY_REPORT.md enumerates those gaps, and flags first an omission about automated access that would, if it can be sourced from the portal's own pages, be the single strongest bulk-access fact in this series.

The readings that are InfobelPRO's rather than the justice administrations': that a live-read architecture removes the extract-date question rather than answering it; that a stored-copy register and a live-read register pose the currency question in different shapes so that one country's model does not transfer; and that the local-register, national-portal, single-operator, federal-obligation arrangement is best read in that order, because the order is what explains it. Those are ours. The comparison with Hungary is a comparison of two published architectures, not a ranking of them.
