A Peru company lookup runs through the Registro de Personas Jurídicas, one of four registers administered by the Superintendencia Nacional de los Registros Públicos (SUNARP), under the Ministerio de Justicia y Derechos Humanos. Records sit in zonas registrales. The searches are the búsqueda de personas jurídicas inscritas and the Directorio Nacional de Personas Jurídicas on sunarp.gob.pe. This guide covers what the first inscription does, what the Directorio publishes and under which laws, and a caution that has to sit immediately beside the first. If you need the Peruvian population rather than one company at a time, the Peru company directory covers the same registered entities with industry, size and contact breakdowns attached, and the Peru business database is the same file described as a dataset.
Peru company lookup: the short version
- With the first inscription, the organisation acquires legal personality, and the legal person arises as a centre of imputation of rights and obligations.
- The Registro de Personas Jurídicas is one of four registers SUNARP administers, organised by entity and covering constitution, statutes, amendment, extinction and the working of governing bodies.
- SUNARP describes its function as inscribing and publicising acts, contracts, rights and titles.
- The Directorio Nacional publishes lists of legal persons citing the law behind each one.
The inscription is constitutive
Most registers in this series record companies that already exist. SUNARP states that Peru's does something else:
"Con la primera inscripción, la organización adquiere personalidad jurídica, y surge la persona jurídica como centro de imputación de derechos y obligaciones."
With the first inscription, the organisation acquires legal personality, and the legal person arises as a centre of imputation of rights and obligations.
Read the verbs. The organisation acquires. The legal person arises. The inscription is not a record of a fact that already obtained — it is the moment the fact comes into being.
The reading rule that follows is real and worth stating: an organisation absent from the Registro de Personas Jurídicas is not a legal person, rather than an unregistered one. Those are different conditions. In a declarative register, an unregistered company is a company that exists and has not filed. Here, the first inscription is what makes the legal person.
And the caution that has to sit right next to it
That is a statement about the register. It is not a statement about your search.
What a particular search covers is a separate question from what the register contains, and this page does not establish the geographic scope of a Peruvian search — records sit in zonas registrales, and whether a given search reaches all of them is not sourced here. PERU_REPORT.md flags it.
So: do not turn the constitutive point into "if it is not in the search, it does not exist". That inference chains a sourced fact about the register onto an unsourced assumption about the query, and it is exactly the error this programme exists to prevent. The safe form is narrower — if an organisation is not inscribed, it is not a legal person — and establishing whether an organisation is inscribed is a question about search coverage that this page cannot answer.
Four registers, four moments
Registration does legal work at different moments in different systems, and four in this series say where.
The Switzerland company lookup guide covers a system where entries become effective against third parties only on gazette publication. The Croatia company lookup guide covers one where data is deemed published at the expiry of the day of website publication. The Austria company lookup guide covers one granting statutory reliance on a query under § 15 UGB. Peru makes the first inscription constitutive.
Four states, four moments where registration does legal work — and they are not equivalent. Binding against third parties, a deemed publication time, reliance on a lookup, and the creation of legal personality are four different things. None is ranked, and none can be read across.
Inscribing and publicising
SUNARP names two functions, not one:
"Inscribimos y publicitamos actos, contratos, derechos y titularidades de las personas de manera oportuna, inclusiva, transparente, predictible."
We inscribe and publicise acts, contracts, rights and titles of persons, in a timely, inclusive, transparent and predictable manner.
Publicity is named as a function alongside registration, which is why a Directorio Nacional exists at all. A body that only inscribed would have no particular reason to publish lists; one whose mandate includes publicitar does.
What a Peruvian company register entry contains
A self-contained summary. Peru's register of legal persons is the Registro de Personas Jurídicas, one of the four registers administered by the Superintendencia Nacional de los Registros Públicos (SUNARP) of the Ministerio de Justicia y Derechos Humanos, with records held in zonas registrales. It is organised by each corporate or non-corporate entity, and comprises the inscription of the organisation's constitution, its statutes, amendment of the statutes or extinction, as well as the working of its governing bodies, among others. With the first inscription the organisation acquires legal personality, and the legal person arises as a centre of imputation of rights and obligations. SUNARP describes its function as inscribing and publicising acts, contracts, rights and titles of persons in a timely, inclusive, transparent and predictable manner. Its online services are accessible 24 hours a day, and free services include knowing the status of an inscription procedure, the presentation of a title, vehicle data, information on the número de partida registral, registered legal persons, and registered verifiers. The búsqueda de personas jurídicas inscritas takes Razón o Denominación and Siglas as its criteria. The Directorio Nacional de Personas Jurídicas publishes lists of legal persons in accordance with article 44 of Law 26887, article 17 of Decreto Ley 21621 and numeral 9.6 of article 1 of Law 30822, and a further list in accordance with Decreto Legislativo 1427. This summary does not describe what the free directory shows or omits, its currency relative to the partida registral, or the geographic scope of a search, because none was established from SUNARP's own pages on the date shown.
Four registers, and what this one covers
"Es uno de los cuatro registros que administra la Superintendencia Nacional de los Registros Públicos (Sunarp) del Ministerio de Justicia y Derechos Humanos. Se organiza en función de cada ente societario o no societario. En ese sentido, comprende la inscripción de la constitución de la organización, su estatuto, modificación del estatuto o extinción, así como el desenvolvimiento de sus órganos directivos, entre otros."
It is one of the four registers SUNARP administers. It is organised according to each corporate or non-corporate entity, and comprises the inscription of the organisation's constitution, its statutes, amendment of the statutes or extinction, and the working of its governing bodies, among others.
That list is the closest thing to a field inventory this page has, and it is given as SUNARP gives it — constitution, statutes, amendment or extinction, governing bodies, with entre otros left as the source leaves it. Note that it describes what is inscribed, not what a search returns.
The Directorio cites its own legal basis
Each list names the instrument that requires it — article 44 of Law 26887, article 17 of Decreto Ley 21621, numeral 9.6 of article 1 of Law 30822, and separately Decreto Legislativo 1427.
That is unusual and useful: a published list whose legal basis is cited on the page can be traced, and a reader can ask what each instrument requires rather than guessing why a list exists.
What any of those instruments provides is not described here. These are citations, not texts — the page reproduces the references and does not summarise the law behind them.
Where a Peru lookup stops
The search keys are two: Razón o Denominación and Siglas.
The second is worth a sentence, because it is rare in this programme. An acronym search is genuinely useful where an entity is known by its initials — common among associations, cooperatives and public-interest bodies — and most registers in this series offer no equivalent.
— services accessible 24 hours a day, with free services including the status of an inscription procedure, the presentation of a title, vehicle data, information on the número de partida registral, registered legal persons, and registered verifiers.
This page does not describe what the free directory shows or omits, nor its currency relative to the partida registral, nor the geographic scope of a search. PERU_REPORT.md flags those three, in that order — the first because it is the reader's opening question, the second because a register describing its own free tier as referential and possibly behind the authoritative record would be a first-order fact for a data business, and the third because a zone-scoped search makes a blank result mean far less than it appears to.
Where the question is a population rather than a company, a firmographic directory covers the same registered entities with classification, size and contact data attached and queryable as a set; the Americas company directory breaks the regional file down by market.
Data quality pitfalls to avoid in Peru
Turning the constitutive rule into a search conclusion. An organisation not inscribed is not a legal person; an organisation not found in a search may simply not have been covered by that search.
Assuming a search reaches the whole country. Records sit in zonas registrales and the geographic scope of a search is not established here.
Assuming the free tier is authoritative. This page does not establish its currency relative to the partida registral.
Reading the inscribed list as a field list. Constitution, statutes, amendment or extinction and governing bodies describe what is inscribed, not what a search returns.
Searching only by full name. Siglas is a documented criterion, and an acronym may be how the entity is known.
Inferring what a cited law requires. The Directorio names its instruments; this page reproduces the citations and does not summarise them.
A repeatable Peru company lookup workflow
- Search by Razón o Denominación, and by Siglas when the entity is known by its initials.
- Establish the search's geographic scope before treating an absence as meaningful.
- Use the constitutive rule as a statement about inscription, never as a conclusion from an empty result.
- Note the número de partida registral, since it is among the free services and identifies the record.
- Trace a Directorio list to the instrument it cites when you need to know why it exists.
- Confirm the free tier's currency against the partida before relying on it.
Frequently asked questions
What does the first inscription do in Peru?
SUNARP states that with the first inscription the organisation acquires legal personality, and the legal person arises as a centre of imputation of rights and obligations.
So an organisation I cannot find is not a legal person?
Not necessarily — that conflates two questions. An organisation that is not inscribed is not a legal person; an organisation you cannot find may not have been covered by the search you ran. This page does not establish the geographic scope of a search.
What can I search by?
Razón o Denominación, and Siglas.
What does this register cover?
It is organised by each corporate or non-corporate entity and comprises the inscription of constitution, statutes, amendment of the statutes or extinction, and the working of governing bodies, among others.
Are SUNARP's services free?
Services are accessible 24 hours a day, and free services include the status of an inscription procedure, the presentation of a title, vehicle data, information on the número de partida registral, registered legal persons, and registered verifiers.
Why does the Directorio cite laws?
It publishes its lists in accordance with named instruments — article 44 of Law 26887, article 17 of Decreto Ley 21621, numeral 9.6 of article 1 of Law 30822, and Decreto Legislativo 1427. What each provides is not described here.
Is the free information as current as the register?
This page does not say. Its currency relative to the partida registral was not established.

Every Spanish passage above is SUNARP's own wording, read on the date shown, with its accents reproduced as written and an English gloss beside it rather than in place of it. No amount appears anywhere in this page's prose.
This page does not describe what the free directory shows or omits, its currency relative to the partida registral, the geographic scope of a search across zonas registrales, the SID-SUNARP national-level search, Alerta Registral, what Decreto Legislativo 1427 provides, or any entity count. PERU_REPORT.md records each and flags the first three in order.
The readings that are InfobelPRO's rather than SUNARP's: that a constitutive inscription makes "not inscribed" and "unregistered" different conditions, which changes what an absence means; that the constitutive point must not be chained onto an unsourced assumption about search coverage, which is why the caution sits immediately beside it; that publicity being named as a function is why a Directorio exists at all; and that an acronym search is a rare and practically useful criterion. Those are ours. The four-country comparison sets out four different moments at which registration does legal work and states that they are not equivalent and not ranked.
