A Mexico company lookup runs through the Registro Público de Comercio (RPC), operated by the Secretaría de Economía in agreement and coordination with the governments of the states. The federal system is SIGER 2.0, and public consultation runs through it. This guide covers what the national system says it is for, what the portal offers beyond a current snapshot, and the stage a filing passes through before it becomes an entry. If you need the Mexican population rather than one company at a time, the Mexico company directory covers the same registered businesses with industry, size and contact breakdowns attached, and the Mexico business database is the same file described as a dataset.
Mexico company lookup: the short version
- The RPC is operated by the Secretaría de Economía in agreement with the state governments, and SIGER 2.0 states its own objective: "Posicionar al Registro Público de Comercio a través de un sólo sistema."
- The portal offers not only a partner's commercial information but the history of their corporate life.
- A registral entry is defined as the asiento de un acto mercantil — the entry of a commercial act.
- The registral process runs through named stages: Recepción, Análisis, Calificación y Entrega.
One system, stated as an objective
SIGER 2.0's own documentation gives its purpose in one line:
"Posicionar al Registro Público de Comercio a través de un sólo sistema."
To position the Public Commercial Register through a single system.
Read exactly what that supports and no more. A national platform exists to unify the service, and the register is operated federally in agreement and coordination with the state governments. Those two facts together describe an arrangement: a federal operator, state partners, one system.
This page does not say the register is fragmented, incomplete or uneven. An objective is a statement of intent, not a measurement of attainment — and treating "we aim to unify this" as evidence that it is not unified would be reading a conclusion into a mission statement. Whether coverage varies in practice is a real and important question, and it is not one these sources answer. MEXICO_REPORT.md flags it as the most consequential thing to establish next, precisely because the answer would change how a blank result should be read.
Corporate life, not just current state
The reader-facing promise is stated by gob.mx:
"En este portal podrás consultar la información en materia mercantil de tus socios comerciales, así como el historial de su vida corporativa."
On this portal you can consult the commercial information of your business partners, as well as the history of their corporate life.
Not just what a counterparty is now — what it has been. That is a different offer from a current-state lookup, and it is the portal's own framing.
What the history contains, and how far back it reaches, are not described here. The source names the offer and not its contents.
An entry is an act
One definition explains why a corporate-life history exists at all. A registral entry is the asiento de un acto mercantil en el RPC — the entry of a commercial act in the Register.
The register records acts, not a standing description of a company. A constitution is an act. An amendment is an act. A merger, a division, a dissolution — each is an act, entered when it happens.
That framing is worth holding onto, because it reorganises what you expect to find. A register of acts accumulates a sequence; a register of states holds a snapshot. Mexico's is the first kind, which is why the portal can offer a history rather than assembling one.
What a Mexican company register entry contains
A self-contained summary. Mexico's commercial register is the Registro Público de Comercio (RPC), operated by the Secretaría de Economía in agreement and coordination with the governments of the states, with the federal system SIGER 2.0. SIGER 2.0's stated objective is to position the Public Commercial Register through a single system. Its roles are given as Administrador Local, Recepción, Análisis, Calificación y Entrega. A registral entry is the asiento — the entry — of a commercial act in the RPC. In consultation, after clicking the Buscar option SIGER 2.0 displays the consulted information; the option Continuar Consulta is then selected, and the system displays the information of the carátula, the cover sheet, of the consulted folio. To search, the user captures the folio mercantil electrónico, the denominación or the razón social, and selects Buscar, whereupon the system displays the results. The portal states that a user can consult the commercial information of business partners as well as the history of their corporate life. This summary does not describe what the consultation returns field by field, or the geographic scope of a search, because neither was established from the sources read on the date shown.
Calificación
The most interesting word on this page is a stage in the process. SIGER 2.0's roles are given as Administrador Local, Recepción, Análisis, Calificación y Entrega — local administrator, reception, analysis, qualification, and delivery.
A filing is received, analysed, qualified, and delivered. Qualification sits between analysis and delivery, as a named stage of its own.
One other register in this series places a qualification stage before entry, and the comparison is worth exactly one sentence with its limits attached. The Spain company lookup guide covers a register where the registrador — a practising lawyer exercising a public function — qualifies and controls the legality of every document that must enter, under his own responsibility, and where the content of the register is consequently presumed exact and valid.
Both systems place a qualification stage before entry. That is the whole of the claim. This page does not say the two are legally equivalent, does not describe who performs Mexico's calificación, and does not extend Spain's presumption of accuracy to Mexico. Same word, two systems, and the sources establish the stage in one and the legal consequence in the other.
Where a Mexico lookup stops
The search keys are three: the folio mercantil electrónico, the denominación, or the razón social. The FAQ sets out the sequence — "Capturar el folio mercantil electrónico, denominación o razón social. […] Seleccionar la opción 'Buscar'; el sistema mostrará los resultados."
And the result opens on a cover sheet before it opens further: "Dar clic en la opción 'Buscar', el SIGER 2.0 mostrará la información consultada. […] Se debe seleccionar la opción 'Continuar Consulta'. […] El sistema mostrará la información de la carátula del folio consultado." — click Buscar and the system displays the consulted information; select Continuar Consulta; the system displays the information of the carátula of the consulted folio.
So a consultation is two steps, and the first returns a cover sheet rather than the record.
This page does not describe what the consultation returns field by field, and — more consequentially — it does not describe the geographic scope of a search. Whether a search reaches the whole country or only part of it is the question that determines what a blank result means, and it is not established here. MEXICO_REPORT.md flags it first, paired with the state-participation question, because the two are the same fact seen twice.
Where the question is a population rather than a company, a firmographic directory covers the same registered businesses with classification, size and contact data attached and queryable as a set; the Americas company directory breaks the regional file down by market.
Data quality pitfalls to avoid in Mexico
Reading a blank result as non-existence. The geographic scope of a search is not established here, so a blank supports less than it appears to.
Reading the unification objective as a finding about coverage. It is a statement of intent, not a measurement.
Stopping at the carátula. The first result is a cover sheet; Continuar Consulta is a second step.
Expecting a standing description of a company. The register records acts, so what accumulates is a sequence rather than a snapshot.
Importing another jurisdiction's consequences from the word calificación. The stage is named here; the legal effect attached to it elsewhere is not established for Mexico.
Assuming a field list. The consultation's contents are not described here.
A repeatable Mexico company lookup workflow
- Search by folio mercantil electrónico where you have one, by denominación or razón social where you do not.
- Expect two steps: Buscar returns the carátula, Continuar Consulta opens the folio.
- Use the corporate-life history when the question is what a counterparty has been, not only what it is.
- Record each finding as an act with its own date, because that is how the register stores it.
- Confirm the geographic scope of your search before treating an absence as meaningful.
- Do not infer a legal presumption from the presence of a calificación stage.
Frequently asked questions
Who operates the Mexican commercial register?
The Secretaría de Economía, in agreement and coordination with the governments of the states. The federal system is SIGER 2.0.
What can I search by?
The folio mercantil electrónico, the denominación, or the razón social.
Why does my result look like a summary?
Because the first screen is the carátula — the cover sheet — of the consulted folio. Selecting Continuar Consulta opens the consultation further.
Can I see a company's history?
The portal states you can consult the commercial information of business partners as well as the history of their corporate life. What that history contains is not described here.
What does calificación mean here?
It is one of the named stages of the registral process — Recepción, Análisis, Calificación y Entrega. Who performs it, and what legal effect attaches to it, is not established on this page.
Does a search cover the whole country?
This page does not say. The geographic scope of a search was not established from the sources read, which is why a blank result should not be read as non-existence.
What exactly is a registral entry?
The asiento of a commercial act in the RPC — the entry of an act, rather than a standing description of a company.

Every Spanish passage above is the publisher's own wording, read on the date shown, with its accents reproduced as written and an English gloss beside it rather than in place of it. No amount appears anywhere in this page's prose.
This page does not describe the consultation's fields, the geographic scope of a search, the relationship between the RPC and the tax layer, or which entity types the RPC covers. MEXICO_REPORT.md records each and flags two together, first, because they are the same fact seen twice: the register's implementation through state-level delegations, and whether what appears depends on how much a given state office has uploaded. If both hold, then SIGER's stated objective of a single system is not yet fully attained, and a reader who finds nothing in Mexico may be looking at a state that has not uploaded rather than at an unregistered company — which would be this page's most useful sentence, and cannot be written on vendor sourcing.
The readings that are InfobelPRO's rather than the Secretaría's: that a register of acts accumulates a sequence while a register of states holds a snapshot, which is why this portal can offer a history rather than assembling one; and that a consultation returning a carátula first is a two-step process a reader should expect. Those are ours. The comparison with Spain is limited to both systems placing a qualification stage before entry, and explicitly does not carry Spain's legal presumption across.
